HISTORIC HOMES TOUR -(Wiscasset as the destination)(back to top)
For those of us who know U. S. Route One in Midcoast Maine, we recognize the seasonal traffic bottleneck that can occur in the waterfront town of Wiscasset. But here's an opportunity to experience the village of Wiscasset in a relaxed and personal way, and take advantage of a special walking tour that features the charm of Main Street, fine riverfront dining and beautiful historic homes and neighborhoods just steps away from the coastal highway. This package combines breathtaking views of the Sheepscot River, a special Maine dining experience and entertaining guided tours of two of Maine's most unique historic house museums, Castle Tucker and the Nickels/Sortwell House.
Starting with a quick train ride, followed by a delightful lunch at Le Garage restaurant, you will be ready to head out on a fun, memorable, self-paced and self-guided walking tour (about one-mile round trip) that includes guided tours of both Castle Tucker and the Nickels/Sortwell house, two very different homes both built in 1807 in the brief heyday of Wiscasset's prosperity as a prominent seaport.
Step off the train at the riverfront stop in Wiscasset, then take a short walk up Water Street to Le Garage restaurant, originally designed as a blacksmith shop just before the arrival of the motorcar in the early 20th century. Now a fine and well-loved local restaurant, Le Garage will be your respite where you will enjoy a hearty lunch overlooking the river and the railroad tracks before setting off on your refreshing stroll of the historic village, a certified National Register Historic District. From Le Garage, you can walk over to Main Street where you will see fine examples of Victorian and Federal Architecture many of which are now charming shops and galleries. One block up Main Street is the magnificent Nickels/Sortwell House, overlooking the downtown area. Originally built by one of Wiscasset's wealthiest ship captains and later restored in exquisite Colonial Revival style, the home is now a museum where staff will welcome you for guided tours. From Nickels/Sortwell House, continue up Main Street, or stroll the back streets making your way up the hill to the corner of Lee Street and High Street where you will see Castle Tucker on its majestic site on the promontory above the banks of the Sheepscot River, overlooking Davis Island. Along the way, you will enjoy curbside views of many historic private homes dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, some of which have been owned by notable figures including WW II hero General George S. Patton, and a variety of important sea captains and merchants. At Castle Tucker, guides will take you on a tour of the Regency style mansion where you will hear stories of the remarkable Tucker family who lived in the house for over 150 years. After touring Castle Tucker, make your way down the road to the waterfront, in time to board the train for your return trip.
From Brunswick, Bath or Rockland, the train arrives at Wiscasset at 11:05 AM. Get off the train and walk to Le Garage restaurant on Water Street in time for an 11:20 luncheon reservation. Following lunch, and with the aid of a customized walking map, begin your open air journey to US Route One/Main Street to the Nickels/Sortwell House on the corner of Main and Federal Streets for a one-hour guided tour. From there, step off of Main Street into a quiet and unassuming neighborhood made up of private residential homes built in the 18th and 19th centuries, where you will make your way to Castle Tucker on Lee Street. Built in 1807 as a private home, Castle Tucker provides breathtaking views from one of the finest mansions of the time. After a one hour guided tour, take your time as you walk down the hill to the waterfront to board the train for your return trip home. You will take the walking tour at your own pace, with the knowledge that you must be at the platform in time to board the train for the trip home, departing Wiscasset same day at 5:30 PM.
Minimum 24 hours required for reservation; 48 hours for parties of 6 or more.
